‘Pre-revival, not post-Christian’: Student revival movement gains momentum in Europe with spring event planned in London

Revive Europe, an evangelistic initiative focused on sparking Christian revival among students across the continent, is training and releasing 100 emerging leaders ahead of the upcoming Awakening Project gathering in London this spring.

The three-day event, set for April 30 to May 2 in Hackney, London, will bring together student revival leaders and supportive adults for worship, prayer, teaching and fellowship. Organizers describe the Awakening Project as a unifying network aimed at mobilizing and equipping young leaders with a passion for spiritual renewal across Europe.

According to a press release from Revive Europe, the initiative is being organized in partnership with three London-based churches — Saint, KXC and Imprint — as well as leaders connected to the 2023 Asbury Outpouring, a widely reported revival that took place at Asbury University in Kentucky.

The London gathering is intended to serve as a platform for connection, encouragement and commissioning of revival leaders from across the continent, the release said.

“We are praying that God will connect the ‘little fires’’ across the continent as we believe we might be in the very early days of an awakening in Europe,” said Sarah Breuel, Executive Director of Revive Europe. She has also served as chair of the 2016 Lausanne Younger Leaders Gathering, and co-leader with her husband René of a church plant in Rome, Italy,

Breuel is known for challenging delegates at the Fourth Lausanne Congress for World Evangelization in Seoul, Korea, last September to prioritize forgiveness in preparation for revival, as previously reported by Christian Daily International.

At the time, she said that revivals were preceded by “travailing prayers”, such as Paul writes about in Galatians, comparing this type of prayer to a woman in childbirth.

Breuel also likened travailing prayer to Hannah weeping in the Bible, or the prayer of Jesus himself in the garden of Gethsemane, before his arrest and crucifixion.

“We can ask God to pour out this gift of travailing prayer in our lives, in our communities, and we can remove impediments with repentance,” Breuel told Congress participants at the time.

“This is not a time for business as usual, the call from John Baptist to get right with God is for you and me.”

Hundreds of students from 75 countries subsequently committed in public to take responsibility for evangelism, while attending the Revive New Year Celebration in Poland and responding to a call-for-action.

One of the commitments made by these students was stepping into revival leadership, according to the Revive press release. The result is that 100 “purposefully selected” revival leaders from across Europe have now been mobilized for the gospel.

The Awakening Project’s three-day event will involve between 300 to 500 participants, with leaders from U.K. churches. It will culminate with an all-night prayer event on May 2 with an expected 1,000 young adults coming together to pray to God for revival in students of their generation across Europe.

“This gathering will include dynamic teaching, passionate worship, and practical labs to equip students and young adults to steward a move of God in their contexts and provide revival leadership within their generation,” Revive Europe said.

The burgeoning interest in revival for students in this context has seen landmark moments since Revive began in 2019. In 2023, the Awakening Project took place in Herrnhut, Germany. Participants learned from the history of the Moravian revival and heard from key leaders of the Asbury Outpouring, including David Thomas and Zachary Meerkreebs.

Last year, Revive first joined forces with the three local churches in London – Saint, KXC, and Imprint – after pastors from these churches visited the Asbury Outpouring. They were “deeply impacted and started hosting joint prayer nights for revival in their city.”

These prayer nights were followed by the Awakening Project collaboration bringing together 200 participants and ended with all-night prayer, attended by more than 1,000 students and young adults.

Looking ahead, and as the Awakening Project continues to develop, with a gathering already planned in Munich, Germany, in 2026. 300 young adults are reportedly already gathering together for prayer nights.

“Together, in partnership and prayer, the Awakening Project aims to raise up revival leaders to transform cities, universities, and generations,” Revive added.

“Revive Europe Movement exists to prepare the way for a move of God among students and young adults in Europe, by hosting catalytic events, investing in emerging leaders, and adding fuel to the fire where God is on the move. We believe that God is moving across our continent right now, raising up a generation affirming that Europe is not post-Christian, but pre-revival.”

Those interested in participating in the Awakening Project can register their interest through the Saint Church website. Revive Europe will also host an additional program on April 30, beginning with a 7 p.m. kickoff event for the Awakening Project. Registration details can be found here.
