David Westlake is stepping down from his role as chief executive officer (CEO) of International Justice Mission (IJM) UK, a Christian anti-trafficking and anti-violence non governmental organization (NGO) after eight years in charge. No reason was given for his departure.

Biju Matthew, based in London and with 14 years of experience working for IJM, most recently as vice president of strategy and operations for IJM Africa & Europe, is acting as Interim CEO until a replacement for Westlake is announced.

A press release by IJM UK said Westlake oversaw “significant growth” as CEO, which included launching anti-trafficking work in frontline scenarios in the U.K. He also strengthened the organisation’s presence and raised its profile across the country.

Westlake is also known for his efficient steering of IJM UK during the Covid pandemic and cost-of-living crisis.

"David has built a strong and passionate team, dedicated to the mission of justice,” said Andy Griffiths, President of IJM Africa and Europe. “His leadership and personal investment have been instrumental in IJM UK’s growth and impact. We are deeply grateful for all he has achieved and wish him the very best for the future."

Westlake joined IJM UK in 2016 after serving as international director at Tearfund. According to the press release, his leadership resulted in millions of pounds raised in funds utilized to “protect people from trafficking, exploitation, and abuse, as well as putting a greater spotlight on these issues and mobilising thousands to take action.”

Reflecting on his time at IJM UK, Westlake said leading the organization had been an honor.

"It has been an immense privilege to lead IJM UK over the last eight years, working alongside a skilled and dedicated team,” said Westlake. “Together, we have strengthened IJM UK’s impact and worked tirelessly to bring freedom and safety to people experiencing modern slavery and violence.

"I am grateful for all we have accomplished and for the incredible people I have had the joy of working with. Thank you."

Biju Mathew, Interim CEO, praised his predecessor and vowed to continue the good work achieved in the past eight years under Westlake.

"I am honoured to step into this role and build on the strong foundation that David and the team have established,” said Matthew.

“IJM UK plays a critical role in the fight for justice, and I look forward to working alongside our partners, supporters, and staff to continue bringing freedom to people trapped in violence and modern slavery. Hope is at the heart of this movement, and together, we will keep pushing forward—because every person deserves to live in safety and freedom."

IJM UK is part of the wider IJM global NGO, with the same aim to stop slavery and protect people from poverty suffering the effects of violence.
